Regret:

The air was cool and crisp as they walked along the paved streets. It was a walk the two had taken many times before but this felt more poignant than any other. This would be the last time they would be together as father and daughter for in the morning, she would become King Consort to the most violent of all the Nine Kings.

As they reached the glistening pool of water that circled the fountain, he gestured for his daughter to sit on the edge with him. He rested his lyre on his lap in front of him, giving her a fond smile.

"You shall be a married woman tomorrow, Shalheira."

The words, though graceful in the elven tongue, wore heavy upon his heart. Despite both being in agreement, this decision did not rest easy on Huchon's heart.

"I shall, Father, and a blessed day it shall be. I have no doubt my future husband shall make sure I am well cared for. My only regret is that I shall be so far from your side."

He gave a sad smile, reaching over and taking her hand in his over the lyre.

"A regret we both share, but I know you shall make the most wonderful of King Consorts. My only wish is for you to be happy and safe."

"I only hope that he shall allow me to continue my art, for I fear that shall merely drive me insane. I know his kingdom is filled with swords and shields, but a brush can be just as poignant. Perhaps I can show him a new path."

"A new path..." Huchon wished he believed what his daughter did. He had met the new king, seen what he had done to his people and to those that did not belong to him. A new path had already been forged with blood for the man she would marry.

Shalheira squeezed his hand in hers, placing the other over the top. "Father, this is a moment of celebration." She pressed her forehead against his. "We shall be safe for an Isembart always knows how to be free."

He chuckled, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead in return.

"Like birds released from a cage, we know where to go and how to return. I know you shall make me proud as you always have done. I love you, my flower."

"I love you too, Father, and I shall not forget the reason I am married. It shall not be in vain."

Huchon looked down at the lyre, running fingers lightly over the strings. It could not be in vain for he had given up his favourite daughter on the chance that they could be safe. His only saving grace is that she would outlive this King Conyan. It was the only hope he had left.
